The Project:
At present the road and rail connections between Sicily and
the Italian mainland are achieved by a complex multimodal
ferry system connecting the Sicilian port of Messina with
Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria on the Calabrian
(mainland) side, with considerable negative impacts on both
sides of the strait. The project entrusted to Technital
envisages the relocation of the vehicle ferry terminal on the
Sicilian side outside the city of Messina, at Tremestieri, 6
km to the south, while guaranteeing the functionality of the
sea and land traffic systems.
The works therefore include not only the new ferry terminal
proper, namely two basins for ferry mooring, berths to
accommodate 4 two-way ferries with easy approach channels and
breakwaters protecting the inner port basins, but also the
related land infrastructures, including safe and efficient
connections between the terminal and the existing road system
(the Messina-Catania motorway and the state highway S.S. 114)
as well as parking areas and yards for vehicles waiting to
embark.
Several alternatives were studied for the connections to the
road network. In the design solution the access ramps to the
motorway and the S.S.114 are achieved by flyovers and
underpasses to improve the traffic flow and allow the
continued operation of the existing service station
The project also includes an environmental impact study with
regards both the marine and land infrastructures with
particular regard to the existing urban constraints and the
problems of sea pollution from the yards and coastal erosion.
