The Project:
The present
configuration of the road network converging on the S. Benigno
area is heavily conditioned by past urban
planning choices of the Flyover and the Helicoidal
Interchange, which have determined the infrastructural and
environmental context. This area is bound on one side by the
port of Genoa with its considerable heavy traffic, and on the
other by the Ferry Terminal with significant vehicle traffic
peaks, especially in the direction of the A7 motorway.
The Helicoidal Interchange – which was undoubtedly
planned for much lighter traffic than that of today – has
become increasingly important to the point where it is
overloaded with functions, with the consequent degradation of
the entire surrounding area and the penalisation of the
service levels, made worse by the transitory nature of the
ferry traffic and port activities.
The ”Flyover” serves as an urban bypass to separate urban
traffic from through traffic develops along the east-west
artery, connecting the urban traffic with the motorway
network. The intense vehicle traffic implies that its cross
section is clearly inadequate to guarantee an acceptable level
of service.
The port
accesses located along the waterfront road Lungomare
Canepa (Ronco, Canepa, Etiopia) and at S. Benigno connect the
port activities to the road network.. In the present situation
all the accesses gravitate to the helicoidal interchange
whereas, once the ANAS project has been accomplished, at least
the Sampieredarena accesses should lighten the load of the
interchange through the connection to the motorway at
Bolzaneto. The layout studied for the various connections
consists mainly in a north-south directrix which links the
Genova Ovest motorway exit further inland with the complex S.
Benigno junction and the S. Benigno access on the sea side,
and an east-west directrix which links the city centre through
via Buozzi and via Milano with Lungomare Canepa.
This interchange
is completed by the realization of a roundabout on Lungomare
Canepa which permits the flow of traffic especially in the
transition phases with the flyover still operating and the
harbour tunnel not yet accomplished.
The need to keep the junction operative during the
construction phases constituted a constraint on the whole
study for the drawing up of the vertical and horizontal
layouts of the configurations which will occur between the
present situation and the final reorganization of the area.
