The Project:
Preliminary and detailed design of the road through the valley
of Calore Salernitano connecting the built-up areas of Valle
della Lucania Cilento through the industrial settlements of
Valle del Sele, between the state highways SS 19 near Sele
bridge and SS 166 near Calore bridge.
The project area, known as the Alburni Mountain Community,
includes 12 municipalities, of the western ones, located on
the valley floor, are directly affected by the road.
At present the area is served by 4 main roads, the state
highways 166, 19 and 488 and the provincial road no. 12, none
of which conform to acceptable standards owing to their cross
section, the sinuous nature of the alignments and the
inadequate radius of the horizontal curves.
The design road (almost 23 km) along the bottom of the valley
provides a safe and efficient connection between highways 19
and 166 and allow for a future link to the nearby A3 motorway
Salerno-Reggio Calabria. The new road has a single carriageway
with two lanes for a total width, including the shoulders, of
9.50 m and is flanked by grassy verges and concrete curbs. The
design speed is 60-80 km/h.
Owing to the difficult orography of the area, numerous
crossing structures are required - including several viaducts,
bridges, flyovers, underpasses and an artificial tunnel – as
well as minor structures such as retaining walls, slope
protection works and countless culverts.
The design was completed by a thorough environmental impact
study, including the careful analysis of geomorphological,
hydraulic and hydrogeological aspects as well as the
naturalistic value of the area.
As the project area is of considerable natural interest
(including, among other things, the National Park of the
Cilento and various Bioitaly sites) the design had to satisfy
important environmental constraints. Furthermore, being very
mountainous and crossed by numerous water courses and gulleys,
the region is is highly unstable and subject to landslides.
Hydrogeological risks were therefore another determining
factor in the choice of the alignment.
The acoustic and visual impacts of the road were likewise
taken into consideration and appropriate mitigating measures
introduced. These included landscaping works, such as planting
vegetation or grassing the embankment slopes and at the
interchanges and sound-absorbing barriers, possibly of natural
vegetation.
