The Project:
The International Airport of Carrasco is the main airport of
Uruguay, connected to 21 cities in 11 different foreign
countries. It was constructed in 1947 and has been constantly
improved over the succeeding years. In 1994 the operational
capacity of the airport was barely sufficient to cope with the
existing traffic flows, and totally inadequate to meet the
future traffic and operational demand.
In the context of a short-term programme of urgent improvement
works, TECHNITAL, in association with SEA (Società Esercizi
Aeroportuali) of Milan, was awarded the contract for the
design of the restructuring of the runways, taxiways and
aircraft parking areas. This project was carried out in the
period 1995-96.
Subsequently, in 1996, the DGIA, again with the support of the
UNDP, entrusted the Consortium TECHNITAL-SEA with the task of
drawing up a Master Plan for Carrasco International Airport.
The Master Plan, comprehensive of the newly designed
aeronautical infrastructures (runways, taxiways, etc.),
involved the definition the future development of the airport
in relation to the passenger and cargo terminals, access
routes and parking areas for buses and cars.
The project included the following activities:
*
updating of traffic data
*
definition of two alternative master plan solutions
*
cost estimates for both solutions
*
selection of the design solution
*
general technical specifications for civil, electrical and
mechanical works
*
investment programme.
